Turning your cool kids into cool cats!
Retro Rhythm is excited to finally offer our amazing swing dance classes for kids! Watch your child transform from someone who just wants to stare at a screen all the time, to a kid who is dancing, smiling, socializing and making new friends. Read below to see what you can expect when you sign up your child for one of our fun classes!
What style of dance do you teach?
We will be introducing your children to the dances of the Swing Era (1920s - 1950s)! They will be learning to 'cut a rug' with the Charleston, 6-Count Swing, Lindy Hop, Vernacular Jazz, and more!
Check out our ABOUT section to read more about these dance styles.
Are there any competitions? Will I have to travel or pay lots of fees for contests?
Nope! These classes let your child experience the joy of dance without the stress (and costs) of competitions. Maybe at some point we can offer the chance to perform for events around the Triangle area but that will be just for the fun of it!
What can I expect my child to learn?
We will be teaching dance technique, footwork, musicality, and choreography. In addition, they will also be taught social skills like how to communicate with others and politely ask for a dance. They will also learn that it's ok to say no, and how we can set healthy boundaries if we don't feel like dancing with someone. Some of our dances taught will be solo but some may be partnered!
Who are the instructors for the Swing Kids classes?
Teaching the Swing Kids classes will be Jackie Plys and/or her husband Joel! Not only do Joel and Jackie have 2 young kiddos of their own, but Jackie has also worked with kids for companies like Disney and My Gym: Children's Fitness Center. She is known for her kindness and patience. Joel has taught dance in numerous schools across the country and is definitely known for his ability to make everything silly and fun!

My son is interested in dancing. Will this be a good fit for him?
Absolutely! Swing dancing is a very athletic dance. It's a dance created on the streets of Harlem, NY in the early 1900s so it has a very different vibe from ballroom dances or ballet. It's fun, energetic, and not at all strict. The attire is whatever they feel comfortable in, including just being able to wear their sneakers to class!
Where are the classes being offered?
Check out the schedule below to see where we currently have Swing Kids classes being offered.

We would love all of the children in the Triangle area to go from cool kids to cool cats with our fun dance program!
